Thing 23

I enjoyed web 2.0 becasue it made me sit down and sift thru all the new technologies. I like to keep up with new things but usually i just dont have the time to find them all or i depend on my friends to send me links or news about cool sites. Many of the things we learned i use on a daily basis but i t def deepened my knowledge and gave me a work setting to apply all these new great tools to. I felt ilke i didnt really have time at work to work on this and ended up doing alot of it at home. I also felt like the posts were confusing at times and i would liked to have seen the discovery exercises more clearly marked to I could go back and make sure i did everything easier. I guess they seemed a little too narrative and i was looking for get in and go directions. I think the library as a whole should def use blogs more in our daily communication, maybe instead of ripple effect we could blog our events and programs, and possibly odcasting or you tubing our trainings for staff who can not attend or even recording our great programs and posting to youtube and maybe linking to local sites so people can see what kinds of things we do. I hooked all my friends on Pandora.com and yelp.com and librarything

Peanut butter and wiki Thing 17!

PB wiki's are great for work projects, I was using pagefalkes for a while and linking up with another librarian in my dept to talk about work things. It also helped keep organized and up to date if one of us was out of the office. we could share ideas for programs and important info. It felt cool becasue it was so collaborative since we both editing it wasnt just static documents. It really helped alot for summer reading when there are so many thngs going on to keep track of.

Thing 16

The Library success wiki was a great resource. I clicked on Library prgrams for kids and teens and it brought me to a database for programming that you can search by age group, cost, topic and so on. I have a dinosaur program comig up and when i looked under dino crafts for preschool kids i found a cool stegosaurs hat craft. The only thing i don't like about wiki's is how plain they are they feel like the backend of something and sometimes they you can follow a long trail but not end up with much info becasue it all user inputted and you need user use to make it interesting.

I like wiki for their ease of use but it can be difficult to expalin to kids who see things like wikipedia pop up first or other user inputted sites that all the info might not be accurate. I think its a great resource for sharing info but people def need to remeber why we have actual encyclopedias and look for info that is academic and verified. Another issue with wikis is the potential for hackers and just people with nothing better to do than mess with things

Thing 15 2.0 rant

Some of my friends in other library systems have done web 2.0 for a while now and I was wo ndering when we would get a turn! I agree with the Micheal stephens points where he talks about building a new librarianship. Patrons come to us for guidance on these new technologies and we need to be current in order to serve them. Its embaressing to have someone come in and ask you how to make a blog or use the scanner when you aren't sure yourself. It casues us to lose credibilty in the public's eyes. we do have to come to terms with the fact that the library needs to extend beyond the physical walls of the building to serve peole wherever they are. Infomration has exceeded what a physical library can contain in both space and expense so it is in our bet interest to go online and check out new ways to store info and share info. I think it is also necessary to use these things in our own daily life so we are familiar with the tools and also a big fan of them so we can lead the way in showing others how to make their lives easier.

Return to Thing 11

Ahhaha i got so into LibraryThing I realized i forgot to blog about! I really liked librarything although i like novelist better for work rec. This is a good way to keep track of my books and find out other books from people who like the same books that i do. A small side thing i liked was getting to see all the differnt cover art for the differnt editions or the books. I usually do choose my books by the covers and titles. I could def see rec'ing this to our patrons who like to search out new books. I have pieces of paper with book titles all over the place but this is a way to organize my picks and save them for later and also figure out if they are worth reading pretty quickly. The only problem i had with librarything was that it must have a small bandwidth becasue it was always very slow in loading. A few times a message popped up saying that they were very crowded so until they remedy that its kind of a drawback. It is also awesome that you can upload librarything to your phone so you can remeber what you like when you are in the bookstore. Like most people my mind goes blank when i walk into a book or music store so it would be helpful to have that. My books were split in popularity some were very other just so but its an interestng feature.

Thing 22 ListenNJ

I don't have an MP3 player yet and I also own a mac (which I <3) so i guess ill have to wait a bit before i can really get into using Listen NJ but from testing it out it seems worth waiting for. Although i am def not giving up my mac! This is a great resource since physical media like cds is going out and hard to keep track of. Its also expensive and hard to keep up with stocking everything people might want. I downlaoded a Michaelk Chabon book gentlemen of the raod which i had previosuly waited for the print copy to come in for me at the library. Although 10 days is kinda rough for me becasue I usually get busy or distracted by ther titles. This is also a great thing to suggest to audio book addicts who co me in wanting more. I reccomnded it to a friend of mine for his long commute to the city.
